About Cardinal Maradiaga

Cardinal Óscar Andrés Rodríguez Maradiaga, S.D.B., is Archbishop of Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

Cardinal Maradiaga was born in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, on Dec. 29, 1942. As a boy, he dreamed of playing the saxophone in a dance band or becoming a pilot. He joined the Society of St. Francis de Sales (Salesians of Don Bosco) on May 3, 1961.

After graduating from college in 1962, as a Salesian he taught chemistry, physics and music at Salesian colleges in El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala for the next 15 years. During this time, he also became a professor of moral theology and ecclesiology at Salesian Theological Institute in Guatemala.

He was ordained as a priest on July 28, 1970. He was rector for three years at Guatemala's Francisco Marroquín University. On Oct. 28, 1978, he was named an auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Tegucigalpa. He was named Archbishop of Tegucigalpa on January 8, 1993. On Jan. 21, 2001, he was made a cardinal by Pope John Paul II. He is the first cardinal from Honduras.

He holds degrees in philosophy and theology and is trained in classical piano. In addition to his native Spanish, he speaks English, French, Italian, German, and Portuguese. He received a doctorate in theology at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome, and also holds a diploma in clinical psychology and psychotherapy from Leopold Franz University in Innsbruck, Austria.

His advocacy for human rights and the poor have won widespread praise. He is further admired as a dynamic pastor who brokered peace accords with rebels and led rebuilding efforts after a natural disaster. He is an outspoken proponent for the cancellation of Third World debt.

He served as President of the Latin American Episcopal Conference (CELAM) from 1995 to 1999.

Currently serving as president of Caritas International, in January of this year he received an honorary award from the Viktor Frankl Foundation. The Vienna-based foundation promotes a humanistic approach to psychotherapy. The Foundation made the award in recognition of the Cardinal's life's work.
About the Encounter

Two years ago, Bishop Gerald Kicanas shared with the Diocese of Tucson Hispanic Pastoral Commission his hope that the Catholic Hispanic community would host two substantial diocesan events annually.

During the April 2007 meeting of the Commission, Father Raul Trevizo, Vicar General, shared his experience at the First National Hispanic Youth Leadership Encuentro in June 2006 at the University of Notre Dame at which Cardinal Maradiaga delivered the keynote address. Other members of the Commission who were part of the diocesan delegation to the Encuentro also spoke of the eloquence and power of the Cardinal's address. The Commission decided then to pursue the possibility that the Cardinal might come to Tucson for a first-ever diocesan Pastoral Encuentro (Encounter).

The Cardinal will give two keynote addresses: Encountering Jesus in a Multicultural Church and The Challenges Faced by Today’s Youth and the Response of the Church. The topics he will address relate to the priorities of the Commission: promotion of the unity of all Catholics in the Diocese, regardless of race, culture, spiritual and fraternal movement affiliation and language; and responding to concerns about youth in the Church.

The Cardinal will present the keynotes in Spanish with simultaneous translation in English projected on large screens.
